Since its introduction in 1991, the Ford Explorer has undergone six generations of changes and continues to be one of the bestselling mid-sized SUVs.

 

The First Generation Ford Explorer (1991-1994)

 

The Ford Explorer made its grand entrance in 1991 as the successor to the recently discontinued Ford Bronco. Under the hood, a 4-liter V6 engine was equipped with a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmission. It was available in two and four-door versions and could be driven by rear-wheel or four-wheel power.

Second Generation Ford Explorer (1995-2001)

This second-generation ride was available in both rear-wheel and front-wheel drive and offered the additional option of a 5-door version, replacing the 2-door model of its predecessor.

Third Generation Ford Explorer (2002-2005)

Fifth Generation Ford Explorer (2011-2019)

The fifth-generation Ford Explorer was released between 2011 and 2019, boasting a revamped body creating a perfect blend of car-SUV crossover. Depending on the trim, the Ford Explorer was outfitted with a 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, 3.5-liter V6, or turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine. Furthermore, the car was accessible in either front-wheel or all-wheel drive renditions.

In 2020, the sixth generation of the Ford Explorer was unveiled, with The 2021 Ford Explorer, 2022 Ford Explorer, and 2023 Ford Explorer models being released in succession. Offering an all-new look on the outside and the inside, the base model was changed to a rear-wheel drive format and came with three options: 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, 3-liter turbocharged V6, or a hybrid option. The latest iteration is the 2023 Ford Explorer, which we will discuss in full here.

The 2023 Ford Explorer offers a range of engine options, from the 2.3-liter turbocharged EcoBoost I-4 powering the Base, XLT, ST-Line, Timberline, and Limited trims with 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, to the 3-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 of the King Ranch, Platinum, and ST trims with 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque, to the hybrid trim featuring a powerful combination of a 3.3-liter naturally aspirated V6 engine and a second electric motor yielding up to 318 horsepower and 322 pound-feet of torque. And all models are equipped with a smooth-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission.

2023 Ford Explorer Base: The Base trim includes the latest automotive technology, including an 8-inch touchscreen, rear parking sensors, a six-speaker sound system, a power liftgate, a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot, and an all-new terrain management system to improve safety and comfort.

 

2023 Ford Explorer XLT: The XLT trim provides more comfort and style than the base trim with a leather-covered steering wheel, keyless entry, an improved infotainment system, and 18-inch alloy wheels.

 

2023 Ford Explorer ST-Line: The ST-Line trim features a 12-speaker B&O sound system, ActiveX seating, a push-start button, and a wireless charging pad for convenience and comfort. The exterior features 20-inch machined aluminum wheels and chrome tip exhausts, giving it a sporty yet sophisticated look.
