Ford Warning Light Guide: What Do the Icons Mean?

March 8th, 2024 by

A car battery can die out of the blue — which is why it’s essential to know how to jump-start a car battery. This can help you get your car started, or you can be a good Samaritan to someone in need of a jump start. Here’s a guide on a battery jump-start, courtesy of our Ford service center.

What You Need

You need two items: basic jump starter cables and a working vehicle. We recommend keeping an emergency car kit with cables in your trunk.

Car battery Jump Start: Step-by-step Process

  1. Park the working car nose to nose (but not touching) against the non-working car
  2. Connect the red jumper cable to the positive terminal (+) of the dead battery.
  3. Connect the other end of the red cable against the positive terminal of the working battery
  4. Connect the black cable against the negative terminal (-) of the working battery
  5. Connect the other end of the black cable against an unpainted metal surface of the flatlined battery
  6. Start the engine of the working car and let it idle for one minute
  7. Start the engine of the car with the dead battery
  8. Let both cars idle for a few minutes before disconnecting the cables in the reverse order
  9. Let your vehicle run for about 15 minutes to ensure the newly-charged battery is good to go

What to Do Next

Keep in mind that while a jump start will revive your battery, the battery will likely fail again soon. That’s why we recommend driving straight to our dealership for a battery inspection. Our technicians at Ford Lincoln of Cookeville will perform a voltage check. If necessary, we’ll install a new battery.

Our parts department carries OEM batteries for every Ford model. Visit our Ford service center as soon as you notice battery issues and we’ll keep you charged and cruising!
