Original Ford Bronco

We’re a team of automotive history enthusiasts, so we love it when customers ask us questions like “When was the Ford Bronco released?” This iconic SUV first graced American roadways in 1966 and is now in its sixth generation. Head over to Ford of Cookeville to chat about each iteration and check out the 2026 model.

About Each Generation

The first generation of the Ford Bronco ran from 1966 through 1977. It was a brawny all-purpose vehicle, and Ford’s first purpose built off-road SUV model. The standard version didn’t have a roof or doors, though drivers could add solid doors without windowpanes or vinyl doors and a convertible top. Here’s a look at how it has evolved over the decades:

  • The second generation (1978-1979) was bigger and more off-road-ready than the original. Enhancements included optional heavy-duty shocks and suspension, and two V8 engine options.
  • From 1980 to 1986, the third-generation Ford Bronco was in production. Its reduced weight made it more fuel efficient, and drivers could pick premium interior features on certain trims.
  • 1987 through 1991 saw the fourth generation’s aerodynamic exterior design, upgraded engine, and the first Ford Bronco with antilock brakes.
  • The fifth generation spanned from 1992 to 1996. The exterior design became even sleeker, and new exterior color options and combinations were available. This iteration also included safety enhancements and more luxurious cabin features than ever before.

After a 25-year pause, the Ford Bronco was resurrected in 2021. The 2026 model boasts an EcoBoost® engine, a 4,500-pound towing capacity when properly equipped, and a premium, modern cabin.
